RESCUE
In Paraguay, two births per day are given by girls ages 10–14*
The cornerstone of our ministry lies within rescuing abandoned and abused children and placing them into the comprehensive care of our Children’s Home in Paraguay.
Like all of Su Refugio’s activities, the ultimate goal of the RESCUE program is to share Christ and the good news of salvation with children, families, and entire communities.
RESCUE A CHILD
Orphan care is life-changing. Your sponsorship gives each child a healthy future by providing a safe and loving home, education, nutrition, and the opportunity to experience the love of God.
A child placed into the Children’s Home arrives by judicial order from the Paraguayan government, as a result of neglect and physical or sexual abuse. On the way to our campus, they ride along dirt roads, passing brick factories and entire families sharing rides on motorcycles. As soon as the child steps foot onto our campus, he or she lifts their head to see a group of children waiting. The child is timidly approached by the group, wholeheartedly welcomed in a gentle embrace that silently says, “We know your hurt” from one rescued child to another. While restoration is a process, they immediately witness God’s radical love and finally understand hope. They know that they are home under His Refuge.
Christian family environment. Children are placed in one of three Christian family units who live in their own homes on campus. In addition, an all-female building provides a home for older girls. Children are nurtured in body and soul in ways that are not possible in a traditional orphanage.
Academic acceleration. Our academic “catch-up” program is designed to bring children up to the appropriate grade level and reintegrate them into the school system. The program has proven to be very effective, even receiving accreditation from the Paraguayan government.
Trauma-informed transition support
Su Refugio is committed to helping our 18-year-olds make a smooth transition into adulthood. This includes guidance and assistance in education, housing, occupational skills training, and finding a local church.
As teenagers in the Children’s Home approach high school graduation, they have the freedom to choose whether to participate in the THRIVE program. The program includes:
Post-secondary education
Guidance for seeking work opportunities and a local church body
Mentorship and discipleship with the Transition Program Coordinator
Safe apartment-style housing at the Palabra de Vida campus (an extension of Word of Life) in Asunción, the capital city of Paraguay
The transition from adolescence to independent adulthood is a major milestone for any young person. For a teen who has grown up in a protected environment after suffering abuse, this transition is uniquely challenging. Our staff are equipped to provide trauma-informed care at this critical point, helping these young adults navigate things such as:
Integrating into society
Maintaining healthy relationships
Financial responsibility
Growing in spiritual maturity
